*sigh* Here we go again[phpbay] With the Vlad the Impaler stuff[phpbay]
Please ignore the first two answerers[phpbay] Vlad the Impaler came far, far later than the origin of most vampire myths, and besides he was never linked with those myths until Bram Stoker made him a vampire in his book in the late 19th century[phpbay]
Vampire myths are much, much older than Stoker, and much much older than Vlad[phpbay] All sorts of cultures had creatures that resembled vampires in some way, even if just in the idea that a creature fed on blood[phpbay]
Let's see[phpbay][phpbay][phpbay]common popular ideas about vampires, such as that vampires make more vampires by biting people, is minimally represented in early vampire folklore[phpbay] There were numerous ways to become a vampire when you died: you might die a violent death, die far from home, be born under specific unusual circumstances, not be buried properly, that sort of thing[phpbay][phpbay][phpbay]
Far too much information to relate here[phpbay] I highly recommend Montague Summers' books on the subject: The Vampire, His Kith and Kin and The Vampire in Europe[phpbay] Summers wrote in the early 20th century, was something of a zealot and was nothing if not thorough[phpbay]
Vampire Academy, Richelle Mead
