vampire book
Vampire Academy is a great fantasy book; it is based in a world where Vampire's exist in the dark or night, unbeknown by humans[phpbay] There are many differences and similarities between "normal"Â vampires and Richelle Mead's Vampires[phpbay]
In Meads book there are two types of Vampires, Moroi and Strigoi[phpbay] Moroi are good Vampires that posses strong magical power[phpbay] They are mortal and don't kill others[phpbay] Strigoi are very much like "normal vampires", the kill, hunt, and eat to their hearts content[phpbay] Strigoi are very strong, fast, and immortal[phpbay] Strigoi aren't born, like Moroi, they are made using one of these two methods[phpbay] They can kill another by draining them of their blood, or they can drink a Strigoi's blood, this can be either forced or willingly[phpbay]Â
In addition to Vampires, this series has another interesting set of characters, Dhampirs[phpbay] Dhampirs are half human, half vampire, and are trained to protect the Moroi, namely Royal Moroi[phpbay] Dhampirs are made when a Moroi mates with a Dhampir[phpbay]
The main plot in this series revolves around Rose and Lissa[phpbay] Lissa is a very powerful Royal Moroi, who is the last of her blood line[phpbay] Rose is her guardian Dhampir (in training)[phpbay] Lissa and Rose attend Vladimir's Academy; it is here where they run into tons of trouble, chaos, challenges, as well as all types of love triangles[phpbay]
When I started this book IÂ was a bit confused, starting the story out, outside of Vladimir's Academy was a little weird, and I don't think I ever really understand the real reason the two ran away, what had spooked them so bad they needed to leave? Oh well, I guess it doesn't really matter[phpbay] Once they got back to Vladimir's I really started enjoying this book[phpbay] The Moroi and their social structure was brilliantly described, and you really understood the characters and their attitudes[phpbay] It was quite fun to listen to the interactions between all the students[phpbay]
Now, I know most people who read this LOVEÂ the Dimitri character, but I personally didn't like him too much[phpbay] The "fatherly love"Â he had for Rose, and the "teacher love"Â she had for him was pretty gross to me[phpbay]Â With that said, IÂ do think he is necessary, and if it weren't for the love/lust thing going on it would be perfect[phpbay]
There are tons more in the book, but only one other thing I would like to comment on - the Rose/Lissa bond[phpbay] This one-way psychic connection was very creative, and I love listening to Rose comment on Lissa's actions when she wasn't around her[phpbay] It helped keep the story going at a good pace, and I really love the idea of them having a secret bond[phpbay] Although I do think Lissa needs to be a bit of a stronger character - her meek, shy, tender voice gives her a way weaker appearance than she deserves[phpbay] Maybe we will see her grow in the next books[phpbay]Â
All in all, I really enjoyed the first book of the series, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone else interested in fantasy, or vampire books[phpbay] I will definitely be reading (errr[phpbay][phpbay][phpbay] listening) to the next in the series[phpbay] Â
