vampire chronicles timeline

The world has gone Communist and capitalism is a dirty word in "The Gladiator" by Harry Turtledove, another well-researched addition to his stories of alternate worlds[phpbay] This is the fifth book in the Crosstime Traffic series[phpbay] It takes place on an Earth that has the technology to access alternate universes[phpbay]
In this view of a future where the Soviet Union won the Cold War, seventeen year old Annarita Crosetti and sixteen year-old Gianfranco Mazzilli are both students at Enver Hoxha Polytechnic in a heavily regimented, Milan[phpbay] Annarita is a good student and she belongs to the Young Socialists' League[phpbay] Gianfranco is an average student at best but he enjoys games and when a new game shop called "The Gladiator" opens, he goes there frequently to play "Rails Across Europe[phpbay]" The shop is closed down for spreading capitalist principles and the Security Police are looking for the proprietors who have all disappeared[phpbay] Eduardo was accidentally left behind and he turns to Gianfranco and Annarita for help to get home[phpbay] But Eduardo is from another time line and home is an alternate universe[phpbay]
The book targets young adults, but the thought provoking plot and impressive knowledge of history will appeal to all ages[phpbay] Two likable teenage protagonists are forced into a dangerous situation[phpbay] Although their difficulties are solved too easily to provide much drama, they learn from their experience and the reader gets two different viewpoints[phpbay] Some momentum is lost through repetitive dialogue and discussions of history and politics, but the imaginative plot and believable alternate reality holds interest to the end[phpbay]
