The vampires have arisen! In today's society where just about anything is tolerated and little is frowned upon, many people strive to be different[phpbay] They seek to forge out an independent identity for themselves, and this is one of the many reasons that people in today's society become vampires[phpbay]
Modern vampirism is little like the fairy tales of old[phpbay] For the most part, today's vampires are just like normal people, with a few easy to notice differences[phpbay] They tend to wear black, stay out late at night and listen to Gothic music[phpbay] In addition, some of them do drink small amounts of blood[phpbay] With those few exceptions however, they're just normal people[phpbay]
Many of them found themselves in today's vampire society out of a desire to fit in with a group, while rebelling against the mainstream at the same time[phpbay] While many of these young vampires will eventually grow out of it and put back on their Banana Republic clothes, a few of them actually go on to become life long vampires[phpbay] It is these older people that you see at the secret underground late night "bite clubs" where vampirism becomes less fad and more fetish[phpbay]
Besides the overtly obvious vampires, there are some who go undercover[phpbay] They lead completely normal lives during the day, giving their friends no hints as to their nature at night[phpbay] Then when the sun goes down they put on their Hot Topic clothes, don some black eye-liner and suddenly they're up for another late night bite at the club[phpbay] These secret vampires are perhaps the scariest of all, as who knows which of your close friends may be covertly lusting for your blood during a mid-afternoon chat by the water cooler?
The major lesson for one to take out of today's vampires is that our society's level of tolerance will create extremely diverse fads, cultures and subcultures that we must be willing to tolerate if we wish to structure our society in this way[phpbay]
There are so many times that I have seen an older individual shun a group of youngsters for wearing black, donning fangs or males for painting their fingernails - and you can see the passionate fire of hatred burning in their eyes when they chastise these social groups that our very freedoms afford and allow[phpbay] Unless we wish to one day live in a society that is not truly free, we must learn to be tolerant of others with very diverse ideas and ideals - no matter how weird or kooky they may seem, vampire kids are completely harmless (even in their 30's), so just leave them be and move along[phpbay]
